OUR GOALS
The DBL would like to extend a warm welcome to all current and future Dalmatian fanciers! We are striving to create connections in the community through education and events that will showcase breed purpose and versatility in our spotted friends!
THE SPOTTED COACH DOG
First written information about the Croatian hunting dog, specifically in the region of Dalmatia, is from 1374. The spectacularly spotted Dalmatian would become a status symbol in the Regency period trotting alongside ornate horse drawn carriages. The Dalmatian retained it's high guarding instinct from patrolling the borders of Dalmatia and later were used by brewers to guard beer wagons during delivery most notably for Anheuser-Busch Dalmatians are heavily associated with Firefighting, they played a crucial roll when fire engines were horse drawn, guarding the spooked equine. Long after the roll was replaced by modern technology the Dalmatian is still a honored mascot.
TALENT
The Dalmatian is highly energetic and sensitive. They would not fall in a beginner handler category and suffer from mass popularity and misunderstanding. They were once thought to be stubborn or dim when in actuality they suffer from a genetic predisposition for deafness, associated with the extreme piebald gene which causes the whiteness of most of their coat and their blue eyes (in those that have blue eyes). The well bred Dalmatian is cunning, severely loyal and a wonderful guard dog. Their talents apply to an array of sports such as Road Dog, Agility, and Scent Work. Their unique coats and well-defined, muscular form lend well in the conformation ring.
